National Poetry Month, initiated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, is the largest literary celebration in the world. It celebrates poetry’s vital place in our culture, the achievement of poets, and the reading and writing of poems. Kevin Stein, from Bradley University, is Illinois’ poet laureate.
Would you like to participate? April 30 is “Poem in your Pocket Day”! Share a poem on Twitter by using the hashtag #pocketpoem.
One of my favorites is “Pothead Pete’s English Presentation” by Gary Dop (see below). This poem can be found in issue 4.2 of Quiddity International Literary Journal, which is produced by Benedictine University in partnership with NPR member/PRI affiliate WUIS, Illinois Public Radio’s hub station.
